Locksmith Tip #2

Security is a big reason why you would want to call a locksmith – other than to get your keys out of your locked home/car. People who call a reputable, good standing locksmith will know that they have all the knowledge of how to keep their home safe with using certain locks for certain doors, etc. Needless to say, Locksmiths are very well versed in Security!

Though it is hard to keep your home secure from professional thieves, you may be surprise that most burglaries are done by amateurs! So there are a few things that you can do to discourage those amateurs.

  1. Keep your home looking occupied at all times. Most thieves don’t want to rob a home if the residents are there.
  2. Don’t let mail or newspapers pile up in front of your home, this lets the burglar know that you aren’t around.
  3. Install burglar-proof windows, making it much harder for burglars to break your windows.
  4. Install locks on all exterior doors and walls.
  5. Keep entries well lit outside.
  6. Install a home security system and make sure wires are well hidden. Burglars will try to find anyway to disable your system.

So there you have it, some of the suggestions may be expensive for your budget – but your security is worth the investment. We say, “Do what you can to keep yourself safe.”

Rekeying High Security Locks

If you are looking to install new High Security Locks, it may be important for you to know that you will need to take everything into consideration. Things like price, brand, durability, features, as well as the future. What if you need to rekey your high security lock? From our experience most people don’t realize that this can become a very expensive problem.

If you spend $200 or so getting a new high security lock installed, you will hate when you have to get it rekeyed. Why? Because not all locks can be rekeyed, and there are other complications as well – this means that you may end up spending much more money than you would ever plan to on a lock. So we are going to explain what you should be thinking about when you are purchasing a brand new high security lock. We would like you to be more aware of what you’d be getting yourself into so that you can make a choice taking all responsibility. Besides, no one likes to be caught by surprises – especially if they aren’t wanting them!

Medeco High Security Locks

Medeco high security locks are very popular and widely used. These locks do have the ability to be rekeyed, only if you go to the locksmith that installed them for you. Why? Whom ever your locksmith was that installed the locks, has the control key that lets him rekey them for you. Only locksmiths licensed with Medeco can install these locks. If you cannot get in contact with the locksmith, you will need to replace your locks.

Mul-T-Lock High Security Locks

Mul-T-Lock High Security Locks are another top brand that people trust. These locks do not have the ability to be rekeyed. So if anything ever happens and you need new keys, you will have to completely replace these locks. Most people find value in this, so it may be the case for you. What if you misplaced your keys? You can purchase a key lock box that is secure and easily accessed by the people that have the combination to. If you buy a Master Key Lock Box – you can mount one to one of you exterior walls, and keep your spare key inside.

Schlage High Security Locks

Schlage High Security Locks are rather popular as well! You can absolutely rekey these locks, and they do not require anything special to do so. If you have a business that has a higher overturn, it may be a very good idea to buy a high security lock that can be rekeyed – or you may explore other security options.

————————-

I am sure that you have realized that by now, we’ve only talked about 3 different brands. If you are looking at other brands, we suggest that you talk to the locksmith about them or you can even call the manufacturer for more information. The manufacturer may be a more reliable source for information considering there are many locksmith companies that aren’t as trustworthy for most people’s standards.

Tip #1 – Lube Your Locks

Most people wouldn’t know to keep their locks lubed. You only have to do it few times a year, and it takes just a couple minutes max. Time invested may be 5 minutes a year, and the benefits are? Increasing the chances of your lock to NOT have mechanical failures. If you happen to have a mechanical failure in your lock and get locked out, calling a locksmith could be pricey depending on who you call! If your lock fails to operate, and you can’t get into your home any other way – you’ll need a locksmith to help (unless you have clever neighbors of course!) and you’ll want to buy a new lock that is durable; one that is known to last a long time.

Summary:

You can lube your locks with lubricants such as WD-40. Just spray the lubricant into the key hole, and wipe off lubricant that may seep out of the hole. That’s it. Just do this a few times a year.
